What My Son is (and isn't)

My Son is the ruined spiritual capital of the Cham — red-brick Hindu temple-towers in a jungle valley, built across nine centuries and half-destroyed by 1969 bombing. It's compared to Angkor and Borobudur, but it's smaller and it's ruins, not a restored monument. Come for the mysterious brick carving, the atmosphere of a lost kingdom, and a beautiful valley — not for towering intact temples — and you'll love it.

Getting there from Hoi An

It's about an hour southwest of Hoi An with no town at the site, so a guided tour or private transfer is the practical way to visit. Early-morning tours with hotel pickup are the most popular; they take the transport and timing off your plate and add a guide who brings the ruins to life.

Go at dawn — really

The one tip everyone gives: go early. The valley is hot and shadeless by late morning and fills with coaches; at dawn it's cool, quiet and softly lit. The early tours reach the ruins around sunrise for exactly this reason, and those slots book out first — so reserve ahead.

The boat ride back

If you can, choose a tour that returns by boat along the Thu Bồn river toward Hoi An, often via a craft village. It's a relaxed, scenic finish to the morning and a nicer way back than the coach. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can lock in an early slot now and adjust later.
